Subregion of Liptov is formed by a long 80 km basin formed by the River Váh flowing eastwest throughout the basin. It is surrounded by the five highest mountain ranges in Slovakia namely High Tatras, Low Tatras, Western Tatras, Big Fatra and the Choč Hills all of which provide outstanding natural features which are attractive for visitors.

There is an abundance of mineral springs. Many of these are hot and used as spas (e. g. Lúčky and Korytnica Spas) and others as relaxation resorts (e. g. at Bešeňová, Liptovský Ján and Rojkov). There are also many caves and gorges in the surrounding area. The largest and best known caves are the Demänovská Ice Cave of Freedom and the Važec Cave in the Low Tatras. These are open to public.

Liptovská Mara Reservoir is situated in Liptov basin and covers area of 21 sq. km. It reflects the natural beauty of Liptov region with its flora and fauna. The artificial lake is also a paradise for water sports and recreational activities such as fishing.

History & Folklore

History and folklore are of great importance to the Liptov subregion. The area is rich in historical monuments of a sacred, archaeological or folk architecture type.

Some of these are considered to be of European and worldwide importance. Most notable examples include the preserved village of Vlkolínec (on the UNESCO list), the castles of Liptov, Likava and Liptovský Hrádok, the open-air museum of Pribylina, the articular church at Paludza and the Celtic settlement at Havránok.

Unique folklore traditions of Liptov region are preserved by many regional folk ensembles and bands. A long-established international folklore festival takes place in village Východná.

The region contains some of the most important museums and art galleries of Slovakia. They include for example the museums of Ružomberok, Liptovský Mikuláš and Liptovský Hrádok as well as the galleries at Liptovský Mikuláš, Ružomberok and Važec.

Sports and Relaxation Attractions

The winter and summer sports and recreation resorts of Jasná, Malinô Brdo, Čertovica and the Janská Valley offer a wide range of accommodation facilities including hotels, boarding houses, campings and private mountain chalets of high quality.

Tourism services are available throughout the year as there are sport halls, winter and summer stadiums, swimming pools, a modern canoeing water slalom area, excellent downhill slopes and cross-country tracks in the winter suitable for skiing.

There is a wide range of specialist sports and recreation activities available in these resorts including walking, hiking, horse-riding, paragliding, ski alpinism, caving, mountaineering, hunting and fishing.
