The region of Orava is characterized by number of natural and scenic values. The richness of Orava is represented by woods and beautiful scenery. Tourists may admire mountains of Western Tatras (Západné Tatry) – Roháče Mountains, Skorušina Mountains, thermal baths in Oravice and Orava Reservoir. The region of Orava is also rich in fauna and flora. Protected landscape region of Horná Orava (The Upper Orava) was created to protect unique plant and animal species.
Towns and villages of the Upper Orava region are situated in beautiful and unique landscape, which is surrounded by mountains and rivers. The towns and villages of the Upper Orava are Trstena, Tvrdosin, Nizna, Sucha Hora, Hladovka, Cimhová, Habovka, Vitanova, Liesek, Zabiedovo, Brezovica, Zuberec, Oravsky Biely Potok, Podbiel a Stefanov nad Oravou.
The beauty of the nature of Orava is completed by historical landmarks. Among dominants of the Orava region stands out Orava castle,built on a high rocks. The 15th century Wooden Gothic Church in Tvrdošín belongs to the oldest historical landmarks. Tourists are also attracted by the folk architecture of relic reservations called Bobrova rala in Podbiel and open-air Museum of Orava’s village in Zuberec – Brestová. Among interesting historical landmarks count also Frantiskova huta (Ironworks of František). Slanický ostrov umenia called “Slanica’s Island of the Arts” located in the middle of Orava Reservoir and Hviezdoslav gamekeeper’s lodge under Babia hora (Babia hill).
Singleness of Orava’s folk culture rests in the close contact of a man with nature. Mainly nature was the basic motif of the folk culture of inhabitants of Orava’s region. It was reflected in folk architecture, folklore, in crafts and customs. Orava is also known as the source of beauty and inexhaustible reservoir of national culture.
Orava belongs to the landscape, which represents the complexity of all beauties that nature can offer. The region Orava consists of three areas. The Upper Orava is the northernmost part of Slovakia, near the border with Poland. The nature full of mountain meadows and torrents offers lots of possibilities for tourism and relaxation. The area of mountains Oravské Beskydy with the highest peak – Babia hora /1725 m/ is called White Orava. Low Orava is situated on the low end of the stream of Orava river. Podhalie je is typical mountain foot area situated on the side of border with Poland. Liptov Liptov is an attractive region for tourists, separated from Orava by Choč Mountains in the south and by Western Tatra Mountains – called Roháče.
